Maritime Open Learning ‘MOL’ – part of Maritime Operations & Logistics at North West Kent College - has over the past ten years assisted well over 150 students to gain Marine NVQ’s, most of which have lead on the to Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s oral examinations and STCW 95 OOW Certificates of Competence.

Our Distance Learning provision has been structured to meet the ever-increasing demands on industry and individuals to gain highly recognised qualifications without spending long, costly periods of time at college.

We are fully aware that time spent at college is expensive for companies and candidates alike in financial terms as well as time.  For some these barriers prevent the chance of further study and future promotion.  To assist with this the time spent at Maritime Operations & Logistics is kept to a minimum whilst maintaining the education and good support to the students.  To meet these obligations we carry out a detailed ‘Two – Day’ Induction followed by six-monthly meetings to assess progress.  While away from the centre students are in continual contact with their tutors and the MOL office via phone, fax, email or post, so students should not feel as distant as the miles may suggest.

Maritime Operations & Logistics is one of the country’s leading assessment centres for NVQ’s in the Marine Industry and has gained the highest grade possible for teaching and learning in the last two government quality inspections.

All of our Tutor and Lecturing staff are time served ships officers from Deck, Engineering and Communications, most of who are accredited vocational assessors and verifiers (TDLB D32/D33 & D34  or A1 and V1) to ensure the quality of both training and assessment.

As a Training Centre we wish to retain our high standards and assist students to reach their full potential as quickly as possible.  To this effect we treat each candidate as an individual.  We assess their current situation both in terms knowledge and qualifications and then armed with this information an Individual Training Plan is drawn up by a subject specialist to guide them through the completion the Learning Modules and Portfolio.
